You Did It! AMERICAN HEMP FARMER Is Soaring
I’m walking on air, for the usual reasons (it’s hemp planting season). And for special reasons: a heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped American Hemp Farmer launch so successfully last week — even though I and my publisher almost exclusively shouted out independent bookstore links for the book, ebook and audiobook, American Hemp Farmer launched as Amazon’s #1 new release in Agriculture, and stayed there for more than its full debut week. If you haven’t checked out the book in its various forms yet, it’s available everywhere including here at my own state’s Collected Works books, where I did a live event from the Funky Butte Ranch just the other day.
I’m loving these virtual events — with no jet lag, I’m able to dance around my hemp field telling stories and hugging soil while folks watch in the Emerald Triangle one day, on Maui the following night, and in Colorado a few days later. Plus, like a proud parent, I can show folks how the Ranch hemp is coming up. The live events continue with this one in celebration of the 11th Annual Hemp Week this Thursday, June 11 at high noon Mountain Time where I’ll be the national keynote speaker.
That photo comes from the cool, moist Oregon field my colleague Edgar Winters and I grew while surrounded by a few hundred thousand acres of wildfire in 2019 (all of this is documented in the book). After the Hemp Week event, there’s this one just before Solstice eclipse on June 18, care of my friends at the NoCo Hemp Expo. You can join all of these events from everywhere on this planet and nearby space stations. Don’t forget to do your time zone calculations as I usually post events with their Mountain Time Zone start time (so I make it on time myself — it’s a busy life here on the Ranch at planting season)..
Meanwhile, at dougfine.com, you can see new videos shot here at soil prep time here on the Ranch just prior to planting. There you can also sign up to receive the Dispatches From the Funky Butte Ranch newsletter (always packed with info and humor and free, though there is a button for a few bucks suggested annual support of the comedic investigative journalism therein).
Also at dougfine.com you can find more order links for the book in all its atomic, electronic and audio formats. There’s even a journalism page with various pieces I’ve written and interviews I’ve done from five continents in recent years -- with several seeming timely now, as they are about my attempts to learn the art of being a solar-powered goat herder. Ya know, to live as independently as possible, just in case — including this fun one with Smithsonian Magazine.
In the actual soil that I and my family have lovingly been building all spring (beneficial microbes: it’s good to have friends in low places), the hemp seems to love these scorching pre-monsoon days here in the high desert that send my golden retriever dashing from shady spot to shady spot. I’ve written about my the joy of seeing my family’s superfood growing, and my efforts to avoid the temptation of over-watering, both in American Hemp Farmer and in the latest Fine in the Field column, which I write each month in support of the advocacy organization Vote Hemp.
Thanks for all your support — I hope the new book is furthering the regenerative discussion a bit while making you laugh. Superfood Security is a Seed Away, and This Time The Farmers Are In Charge.
